Three bedrooms in Ketchum, with the galleries in walking range

Downtown Ketchum, Idaho under December snow with Bald Mountain rising behind the rooftops

Short answer: of the three-bedroom homes we manage in Ketchum, three are worth putting side by side for a December ski trip with gallery days built in. Slope-Side Chic sits a minute's walk from the Warm Springs Lodge and lifts. Hulen Hideaway is a quieter house north of downtown with a wood stove and a private hot tub. The Big Wood Retreat is a remodeled townhome on a golf course with a loft that sleeps the kids. All three have mountain views and a fireplace. Rates and December availability move constantly in ski season, so confirm both with us before you plan around a number.

Now the part a listings page won't tell you, which is how the arts side of this trip actually works and which of those houses suits it.

Ketchum's galleries are a four-block problem, not a driving problem

The cultural density here is concentrated and walkable, which changes the calculus on where you stay. The Sun Valley Museum of Art sits at Washington Avenue and Fifth Street, one block west of Main, and admission is free, always. Gail Severn Gallery is at First Avenue and Fourth Street. Kneeland Gallery is on North Leadville. Gilman Contemporary is out on Sun Valley Road, and Hemmings Gallery is on Walnut. You can see all of them on foot in an afternoon, in boots, with a coffee, between the morning session on Baldy and dinner.

That matters more than it sounds. A lot of visitors plan a "culture day" and lose it to logistics. In Ketchum you don't need one. Ski until lunch, walk Main Street while your legs come back, and still be in the hot tub by five. Sun Valley Village is four or five minutes' drive from town, and the beginner terrain on Dollar Mountain is about ten minutes from Baldy, so a family splitting its day between lessons and the main mountain isn't committing to anything heroic either.

Which means the house question isn't "how close is it to the art." It's how close you want to be to the lift, and how much separation you want from the noise of Main Street at the end of a ski day.

Slope-Side Chic: for the group that skis first and thinks later

This one is for people whose December revolves around first chair. It's a minute's walk from the Warm Springs Lodge and lifts, which in practice means you ski to the house for lunch and nobody has to drive anywhere. Three bedrooms, three and a half baths, sleeping six: a king in the primary and a queen in each of the other two, so it works for three couples or a family with older kids without anyone drawing the short straw.

The living room windows look at Mount Baldy and there's a wood-burning fireplace under them, which is the correct way to end a cold day. Outside, there's a hot tub on the patio. There's also a proper workspace with a built-in desk and a decent chair, which is worth knowing if one of you is stealing a Friday.

Two caveats. Parking is two driveway spaces outside the garage, with no garage access, so a third car gets awkward. And dogs need written approval from us in advance, one dog, two years or older.

Hulen Hideaway: the quiet house with two living rooms

North of downtown in Hulen Meadows, this three-bedroom gets you out of the center of things while keeping downtown and Sun Valley Resort minutes away. It's our favorite of the three for a trip where the evenings matter as much as the skiing, mostly because of one room: a second living room off the kitchen with plush seating and a wood-burning stove. Somebody watches a film in the main room; somebody else sits by the stove with a book and the gallery catalogue they just bought. For six people in a house, having two places to sit is worth more than a fourth bathroom.

The bedrooms run king, queen and full, sleeping six across three rooms. There's a private hot tub on the enclosed back deck under the trees, a high chair and a dining table for six, and the kitchen is built around a large island, which is where everyone ends up anyway. Up to two dogs may be allowed with our approval beforehand.

The trade-off is real and worth saying plainly: two bathrooms rather than the three and a half at Slope-Side Chic, and you're driving or shuttling to the lift rather than walking. It's a residential neighborhood with quiet hours, so a group planning a loud week should look elsewhere.

The Big Wood Retreat: three bedrooms that sleep eight

Here's where the bedroom count stops telling the whole story. This is a three-bedroom condo, a townhome on a golf course near downtown, and it sleeps eight: two king bedrooms with their own remodeled en-suite bathrooms, plus a loft with four twin beds and its own bath. If you're two families traveling together, or one family where the kids are happy in a bunkroom arrangement, this is the layout that stretches furthest for a party of this size.

It was recently redone, with new wood flooring, fresh paint and rebuilt primary bathrooms, and the smart TVs in the king rooms take your own Netflix login. Gas fireplace, floor heaters throughout, mountain views off the deck. Four bathrooms total, which is the number that keeps a group of eight on schedule for a 9am gondola.

No pets here at all, zero tolerance, because the owners have allergies. And it's a condo, so you're sharing a building rather than having a yard to yourself.

How to pick, in one pass

  • You want to walk to the lift: Slope-Side Chic, a minute from the Warm Springs Lodge.
  • You want a hot tub and somewhere quiet to sit after dinner: Hulen Hideaway, where the wood stove room off the kitchen does most of the work.
  • You're eight people, not six: The Big Wood Retreat, where the loft's four twin beds and four bathrooms make eight workable.
  • You're bringing a dog: Slope-Side Chic or Hulen Hideaway, both with prior written approval from us. The Big Wood Retreat is a firm no.
  • You want a hot tub, full stop: the first two. The Big Wood Retreat doesn't have one.

One more honest note on the shortlist: these are the three-bedroom Ketchum homes I'd put in front of an arts-minded skier, but they're not the whole book. We have fifty-one properties in Ketchum, and some of what fits this trip has more bedrooms than you asked for. A downtown residence above the 5th & Main building, for instance, puts you within walking distance of the galleries on First Avenue and Leadville, with a heated terrace and Baldy in the window.

What your nightly number actually has to cover

Ski-season rates in Ketchum move with the calendar, and December is the month where the swing is widest. Opening day on Baldy usually lands at the tail end of November, which means early December can be a different market from the week of the holidays, in the same house. Rather than quote you a figure that will be stale by the time you read it, tell us your dates and we'll come back with the real number, taxes and fees included, so you're comparing like with like rather than a headline rate against a checkout total.

Two things worth factoring in while you do the math. Booking direct with us skips the platform fees, and we're reachable around the clock once you're in the house, which in a mountain town in December is not a trivial amenity. We can also arrange grocery delivery, ski rentals, a private chef or a car ahead of your arrival, which tends to matter most for the group that lands at Friedman Memorial in Hailey, about twenty minutes south, late on a Friday with no interest in a supermarket run.

And the cheapest cultural day in the valley is genuinely free. The Sun Valley Museum of Art has been going since 1971, admission costs nothing, and it's open Tuesday through Saturday. Check their current hours before you walk over, because they've shifted.

A December day that works from any of the three

Ski River Run in the morning, which is where most people start because the gondola and the parking are both there and it's only a few minutes out of Ketchum. Come off the hill early, around the time the light goes flat. Walk Fifth Street to the museum, then down to First Avenue, where Ochi and Gail Severn have been shaping that block for over twenty years. Finish at Gilman Contemporary on Sun Valley Road if you still have daylight.

Then back to the house to cook. All three of these kitchens are set up for it, down to the spices, and in a town where December dinner reservations are competitive, that's the difference between an evening you control and one you don't. Hot tub after, if you've picked one of the two that has one.

Tell us your dates and how many of you there are, and we'll tell you which of these is actually open.
